D-Day
- What the allies planned had gone wrong on D-Day
- Paratroopers were dropped far away from their desired drop zone
- People who were dropping bombs missed their targets
- Landing craft were launched too far out and deposited troops on the wrong beaches
- Amphibious tanks sank to the bottom of the sea
- Although the Allies messed up, the Germans made mistakes also
- The German commanders were often confused in the field and were often unprepared
- On June 5th, planes from England took off at around 11 p.m.
- The planes carried about 13,000 men from the U.S.
- As they approached the coast of Normandy, they ran I to a huge cloud bank which led to trouble because many pilots were inexperienced
- The clouds and in some cases German antiaircraft fire threw them off
- American paratroopers made the planes drift off into an unfamiliar territory
- Few landed on target while others wound up as far as 35 miles away from where they were supposed to be
Battle of the Bulge
- Early in the morning on December 16, 1944 Germans attacked American positions in the Ardennes forest, sending them reeling back in surprise and confusion
- The Germans created a "bulge" that was 60 miles deep and 50 miles wide at the base, which was well short of Hitler's objectives
- This slowed the allies but however did not stop them
- While Allied armies advanced on the ground allied planes bombed Germany
- At night British airman dropped bombs on German cities during the day Americans bombed factories and oil refineries
Victory in Europe
- April 1945 Germany was collapsing
- American troops were closing in on Berlin from the west
- Soviet troops were advancing from the east
- April 25 American and Soviet troops met at Torgau, south of Berlin
- Allied air raids pounded the city
- May 7 1945 Germany surrendered to the allies
- May 8 allies celebrated V-E day
